Staying Stylish While Keeping Cool This Summer

Staying Stylish While Keeping Cool This Summer

There’s nothing better than those first proper sunny days like the amazing heatwave we’ve been experiencing over the last week. Iced coffees (matcha for me), late evenings, garden BBqs and finally being able to wear something other than a coat.

But when temperatures start climbing, getting dressed can suddenly feel a little less effortless. One minute you want to look chic and put together, the next you’re wondering how to survive the day without overheating.

Dressing for hot weather doesn’t mean sacrificing style. It’s all about choosing breathable fabrics, easy silhouettes and pieces that keep you cool while still feeling polished. Think floaty linens, relaxed co-ords, oversized shirts, lightweight dresses and sandals you can actually walk in.

Whether you’re packing for vacation, dressing for the office during a heatwave or just trying to stay comfortable on weekends, these are the summer styling tricks that make getting dressed feel easy again.

Easy ways to dress cool in the summer sun

Choose breathable fabrics

When the weather heats up, fabric makes all the difference. Natural, lightweight materials like linen and cotton allow air to circulate and help prevent that sticky, uncomfortable feeling synthetic fabrics can cause. A relaxed linen shirt or cotton midi dress instantly feels cooler and looks effortlessly summery too.

Go for loose, relaxed silhouettes

Tight clothing and heat rarely mix well. Oversized shirts, wide-leg trousers, floaty skirts and relaxed dresses not only feel more comfortable in hot weather, but also create that effortless “thrown-on” summer look everyone loves.

Lighter colours really do help

There’s a reason we naturally gravitate towards whites, creams and soft neutrals in summer. Dark colours absorb heat, while lighter shades reflect sunlight and keep you feeling cooler. Plus, nothing looks fresher than crisp white linen on a sunny day.

Build outfits around easy staples

Summer dressing becomes much easier when you have a few reliable hero pieces in your wardrobe. Think:

A linen co-ord

An oversized white shirt

Lightweight wide-leg trousers

A simple cotton midi dress

Comfortable leather sandals

A woven tote bag

Sunglasses you wear with everything

The best summer outfits are usually the simplest ones – this is my favourite thing about the summer months.

Don’t forget practical accessories

A chic outfit quickly loses its appeal if you’re squinting in the sun or carrying a heavy bag in the heat. Oversized sunglasses, straw hats, lightweight crossbody bags and breathable sandals aren’t just stylish, they genuinely make summer dressing more comfortable.

Embrace the undone look

Summer style is supposed to feel relaxed. Slightly crinkled linen, messy buns, minimal makeup and easy layers all add to that effortless warm-weather aesthetic. Sometimes the less “perfect” an outfit looks, the more expensive and stylish it feels.

Ultimately, dressing for the summer sun is about finding that balance between comfort and style. The pieces you reach for most will always be the ones that feel easy, breathable and effortless to wear, especially during a heatwave.
