Packing for my holiday used to mean cramming my suitcase full of clothes I never actually wear, and traipsing it back and forth to ultimately put it all away again and wonder why I keep doing this.
A few years ago I actually made a diary of what clothes I actually wore on my holiday so that rather than guessing what I might feel like wearing – I actually had a realistic list of what I will actually wear.
Here are ten easy ways to pack smarter for your next trip using my tried and tested methods.

1. Choose a Colour Palette
Sticking to two or three complementary colours makes it much easier to mix and match outfits. Neutral shades such as white, beige, navy and black work beautifully with one accent colour and help create multiple looks from fewer pieces. You can then use accessories to add a pop of colour.
2. Pack Versatile Pieces
Look for items that can be dressed up or down. A linen shirt, a simple midi dress or tailored shorts can work for sightseeing during the day and dinner in the evening with just a few accessory changes. I find switching out flip flops to a small heel is one of the easiest ways to take a simple outfit from casual daytime, to chic evening vibes.

3. Plan Your Outfits Before You Pack
Rather than throwing in extra “just in case” items, plan your outfits in advance. Aim to create several combinations from the same pieces to maximise your wardrobe without overpacking (and then refrain from throwing in any extras once you’ve finished)!
4. Prioritise Lightweight Fabrics
Natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and lightweight viscose are ideal for warm-weather holidays. They take up less room, are breathable and help keep you comfortable in the heat. The difference between packing for summer and winter in terms of suitcase space is wild!

5. Limit Your Shoes
Shoes are one of the bulkiest items in any suitcase. Three pairs are usually enough: comfortable walking shoes, sandals for daytime and a dressier option for evenings. I tend to wear my heaviest pair (usually trainers/sneakers) to travel in. This way I’m comfortable while travelling, and my suitcase isn’t half filled with only one item.
6. Use Accessories to Create Different Looks
Accessories are a great way to add variety without taking up much space. Jewellery, scarves, belts and handbags can completely transform an outfit and make it feel fresh each time you wear it.

7. Include Multi-Purpose Layers
Even warm destinations can have cooler evenings or heavily air-conditioned restaurants. A lightweight cardigan, denim jacket or oversized shirt will add versatility without taking up much space. Again, this is an item that I will try and wear when travelling so as to avoid overpacking my actual case.
8. Pack Pieces That Don’t Crease Easily
Wrinkle-resistant fabrics make travelling much easier and ensure you always look polished. Jersey dresses, knitwear and textured fabrics are particularly practical choices.

9. Roll Your Clothes Instead of Folding
Rolling clothing can help maximise space and minimise creases. Packing cubes are also a great investment, helping to keep your suitcase organised and making it easier to find what you need (you know how much I love a packing cube)!
10. Leave Some Space for Holiday Shopping
It’s tempting to fill every inch of your suitcase, but leaving some spare room means you’ll have space for souvenirs or any holiday purchases you pick up along the way, and somehow packing to come home never seems to be as organised and space saving as it was on the way out!
When it comes to holiday style, less really can be more. By choosing versatile pieces and planning ahead, you can create a chic and practical wardrobe that works harder, saves space and makes getting dressed on holiday effortless – have a lovely summer holiday!
