A New Year Closet Clearout

A New Year Closet Clearout

There’s something about the new year that makes me want to clear everything out and start fresh. As soon as December arrives I get that urge to reset, and my wardrobe is always the first place I look. It’s the perfect moment to re-evaluate what you love, what you don’t love anymore, and where the gaps are that stop your outfits feeling complete.

The festive season gives most of us a little breathing room. Between Christmas and New Year there are usually a few slow, cosy days where the pace softens. I always find this is the ideal window to do a proper clearout. You can take your time, try things on, rediscover old favourites, and let go of the pieces that just don’t feel like “you” anymore.

Start by going through your wardrobe and removing everything you don’t need, want, or wear. Be honest with yourself. If it hasn’t seen daylight in a year or you keep putting it back on the hanger, it’s probably time to say goodbye.

Once you’re left with the pieces you think you want to keep, try everything on. Make sure it still fits comfortably, fits the way you want it to, and still feels like something you genuinely enjoy wearing. This step alone can be so revealing and often brings clarity about what actually deserves a place in your wardrobe.

Next, look for the gaps. What needs replacing? What’s missing that would make getting dressed easier? Sometimes it’s a great pair of jeans, sometimes it’s a classic knit, and sometimes it’s accessories that tie outfits together. Spotting these gaps helps you shop with intention in the new year instead of impulse buying things that don’t work.

Once you’ve edited things down, organise everything in a way that feels intuitive. You can sort by item type like jeans, tops, dresses or whichever system makes getting dressed simple. Then play around with creating outfits from what you already own. Try different combinations, mix pieces you haven’t worn in a while, and take photos of the looks you love. These little outfit snapshots become such a lifesaver when you’re in a rush or when you want a bit of inspiration to wear pieces you don’t normally reach for.

A new year brings new energy, and starting it with a wardrobe that feels intentional, refreshed, and aligned with who you are right now is the best gift you can give yourself.

I’m planning to do my closet clearout between Christmas and new year and I already can’t wait to get started – I hope you enjoy doing it yourself too!
